A Day in the Woods- Santa Elena Hiking Tour is more than a hike through the mountains. It’s a day to get a feel for the community of Santa Elena, a part of Antioquia still not mapped in the tourist scene.
The village of Santa Elena, located 35 minutes outside Medellin, is a beautiful example of rural life in Antioquia, and an emerging hot spot for environmental activism and sustainable living. A Day in the Woods hiking tour gives visitors the chance to both experience an invigorating hike in stunning mountain terrain, and also to relax outside the city in an environment inspired by creativity, passion and sustainability.
About the Tour
This all-day excursion includes a challenging 2-hour hike, ending in watching the sun set over the mountains. Along the way are indigenous ruins, a natural swimming hole (if you’re not afraid of the cold!), and a unique chance to explore Colombia’s biodiversity with a knowledgeable guide. After the hike we stop by rural shops to buy supplies and share the hands-on experience of cooking authentic Colombian food at the local finca and hostel, El Rosario Casa Creativa. Cost: $60,000 COL with a group rate for 4 people. This includes lunch and dinner which will be cooked and eaten at the local finca. It also includes transport to and from Medellin (35 minute public bus ride there and back - if bus is full we might have to stand) and to and from Casa Creativa.

When: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday: start to finish 11:00am – 9:30pm approximately
Hike difficulty: Some parts of trail are steep and not clearly marked. Not recommended for people with knee problems.
Tours are held in English and in Spanish; From Parque San Ignacio you’ll be accompanied by a guide, upon arrival at Santa Elena hikes are led by a local guide.

The tour operates with a 4 person minimum, so booking in advance is essential. We ask that you let us know if you have to cancel at the latest by 8pm the night before so that we can take that into account in food preparations. Drop us an email and let us know how many people and their emails (for confirmation purposes only). If you have a cell phone include that to. That will allow us to help contact you the day of in the case there is any confusion. All personal data received is treated as completely confidential and destroyed after a tour. Once you sign up we will send you the logistical details you need to know.

CreativeExcursions tours are done in collaboration with El Rosario Casa Creativa. The Casa Creative was founded in May 2011 as a space for creation, inspiration, research, discussion, and experimentation around contemporary art and culture. At an altitude of 2,550, it’s a finca and hostel where people can stay regardless of their discipline to explore and create. Hikers are welcome to stay over after the excursion or come back and try out the hostel sometime down the line.
